Hindi is our National and official language. The Hindi Department was established in 1958, with Hindi as a second language of study. The Department of Hindi at St. Joseph’s College is the largest Second Language Department catering to 60% of the total strength. The department attains a high percentage of results every year. Intensive coaching is given to students and counselling is done at intervals.

v To inculcate our rich culture and heritage among the students

Modern and Medieval poetry have been retained to educate our students on the cultural, social, and moral values of India. Different forms of prose and Functional Hindi are included to increase language power, writing skills, and comprehension. Grammar is needed for language enhancement.
The main aim of the Hindi department is to prepare the students for National, global needs and IT needs of the present day, Hindi being one of the largest spoken languages of the world. Department conducts many workshops and seminars.
The Department of Hindi has been served by many eminent teachers like Dr. Vijayalakshmi, S. Rao, and Sri. Kameswara Rao over the years. Dr. P.K. Jayalakshmi is the present Head of the Department working as Chairman, BOS and Press Incharge of the college.

The Hindi Department has been acclaimed internationally too, as the Head of the Dept. Dr. P.K. Jayalakshmi deputed as  ICCR Chair in the Dept. of Indology, University of Sofia, Bulgaria for 2 years. She has successfully represented the country in propagating Indian Culture across the European Countries from 2012-2014.  
As the AP State Best Teacher Awardee for 2016, she proactively involves the students in all activities whether it is Hindi Fortnight Celebrations or Pratibha magazine and other creative activities.   
While undertaking UGC Major and Minor Research Projects.  
The Hindi Department faculty-guided 1 Ph.D. and 18 M Phil Scholars.
They published 14 literary books and  edited 4 Seminar journals and 2 Degree Hindi Textbooks.  

The Dept has the expertise of organizing 3 National Seminars (2011-17) and 2 International Seminars (2016-18) earlier, which were well attended by many delegates from India and abroad.   
Though  Hindi is a Second Language, many Alumnae have been motivated to complete their PG and Doctorate in Hindi successfully.

HINDI-SAPTAH is a significant feature in SJC during September. Every year Hindi dept. observes Independence Day and Hindi Day (14 Sep.) to inculcate values like self-respect, National integrity, secularism, social equality, etc dept organizes various competitions and programmes in the college. Students in large numbers participate and mark their respect towards the Nation and National language. Students are given the opportunity to organize and participate in a variety of co-curricular and extra-curricular Competitions like Essay and Creative writing, elocution, debate, Doha-Antakshari, just a minute, slogan writing, quiz, solo and group singing. Winners are given away the prizes on  Valedictory day Eminent Hindi scholars are invited as chief guests to deliver lectures on the significance of the official language. Faculty members appreciate the talents of students with mementos and certificates. Senior Students are given the opportunity to conduct the competitions and organize the Hindi-function and they  prove their leadership qualities  and organizing skills

A Departmental magazine called “Pratibha” has been published since 2006 to bring out the hidden talents of the students. Faculty encourage students to participate in inter and intra-collegiate youth  festivals which provide healthy competition among students of various colleges as well as to foster leadership quality among students.
To promote the creative skills and talents of the students, along with the publication of the annual magazine the department conducts various competitions like essay writing, elocution, debate, presentation of skits, quizzes, extempore, and dumb charades.
