About Department
Hindi language is also known as Hindi-Urdu or Hindustani. Hindi as a language traces its origin to the Indo-European language family of languages. The closest language to Hindi can be considered Arabic. The importance of learning Hindi cannot be over emphasized since it is considered to be the Rashtra Bhasha – the national and official language of India. It serves as the link language and knowledge of Hindi will go a long way in promoting National Integration. In India, knowledge of HIndi is useful for entry into various Central Government jobs and to move freely within the country either for pleasure or profession. World wide Hindi language is the second most spoken language in the world after Mandarin Chinese. It’s estimated that nearly half a billion people worldwide speak this wonderful language.
Hindi is our National and official language. The Hindi Department was established in 1958 and Hindi as a second language of study. The Department of Hindi at St. Joseph’s College is the largest Second Language Department catering to 60% of the total strength. The department attains high percentage of results every year. Intensive coaching is given to students and counselling is done at intervals.

Modern and Medieval poetry have been retained to educate our students on cultural, social and moral values of India. Different forms of prose and Functional Hindi are included to increase language power, writing skills and comprehension. Grammar is needed for language enhancement. The main aim of Hindi department is to prepare the students for National, global needs and IT needs of the present day, Hindi being one of the largest spoken languages of the world. Department conducts many workshops and seminars.
The Department of Hindi has been served by many eminent teachers like Dr. Vijayalakshmi.S.Rao and Sri. Kameswara Rao over the years. Dr. PK.Jayalakshmi is the present head of the department working as Chairman , BOS and Press Incharge of the college.
The Hindi Department has been acclaimed internationally too, as the Head of the Dept. Dr. P KJayalakshmi, deputed as ICCR Chair in the Dept. of Indology, University of Sofia, Bulgaria for 2 years. She has successfully represented the country in propagating Indian Culture across the European Countries from 2012-2014. As the AP State Best Teacher Awardee for 2016, she proactively involves the students in all activities whether it is Hindi Fortnight Celebrations or Pratibha magazine and other creative activities.
While undertaking UGC Major and Minor Research Projects. The Hindi Department faculty guided 1 Ph.D and 18 M Phil Scholars They published 14 literary books and edited 4 Seminar journals and 2 Degree Hindi Text books.

- To strengthen students’ ability to analyze, interpret and evaluate all forms of literary expression. With a high caliber faculty we promote academic excellence .
- Pratibha- To showcase the creative talents of the students, publishing departmental magazines since 15 years.
- Seminar Convener for 2 UGC International and 3 UGC National seminars and 2 International Webinars in Hindi.
- Research Guide: 6 scholars were awarded M.Phil.
- Principal Investigator for 2 UGC Research Projects.
- Active litterateur: Participates in various literary organizations, Kavi Sammelans, interactive Radio, F.M, and Gnanavani programmes. Also reviews novels, stories, and poetry.
- AIR Programmes: She coordinates the Rangarang Youth Programmes and delivers talks on several literary trends in Hindi and Telugu which are broadcast through ALL INDIA RADIO.
- International Recognition: Deputed as a Cultural Ambassador to Sofia University, Bulgaria {2012-14} by ICCR and MEA, GOI. She promoted Hindi and Indian culture across European countries.
